Raja Ampat - Wobbegongs & Mantas

[2 days earlier] "Hmmm ... double booking?", and the original one only gives error notifications?! The new one is only one way, and stops at Makasar?! The chat with KLM didn't help a lot: "this is how your travel agent arranged it, you better contact them". According Natalie, from Diving Holidays, our travel agent, all was going to be okay. She had called Garuda ...
Much later that day we could finally check in on our original booking/itinery. Pfew.

November 20th - Double Booking

Smooth drive to the airport, no traffic.

At the KLM checkin desk: "No, I can only see you going upto Ujung [Makasar] and can only check in your lugguage so far". What!?. "Garuda is in terminal 3. Not sure where exaclty but you can ask there". @$%$% aagghh.

"O?" "Now I can see the 3rd flight too". .... what a pleasant surprise, pfew. All lugguage checked in and labelled for Sorong.

To the lounge, flights in 2 hours already.

Amsterdam → Singapore → Jakarta. At Jakarta Airport we need to re-check-in our luggage for the domestic flight [luckily some curious ground staff asked us what company we were flying and to where, advising us to do so]. The Visa On Arrival was also quickly arranged. Two more flights to go: Jakarta → Ujung [Makasar] → Sorong.

November 22nd - Papua Explorers

Arrival at Sorong. No need to wait for the luggage. Also Jamal from Papua Explorers is already there. We're put in a car to the Marina Hotel, where we need to wait for the boat trip to the resort @ 11:30 [so 5 hours later → at that moment we think that's because we have a "free" transfer and hence need to join the Supply Boat. Later on we understand that even a Private Transfer wouldn't be leaving much earlier].

Little after us Magnus and Una from Sweden, and Gary and Barb from Canada arrive. We all patiently wait for the 5 hours in the hotel, and the 2.5 hours on the boat to pass. A pod of Spinner Dolphins is saying welcome to Raja Ampat on route. Very nice.

The welcoming sounds of music and singing we can here from quite a distance, getting at the resort. [very nice, but no time to enjoy. TOILET NOW!]

Lynn (Australia) is taking care of the arrival briefing, after which lunch is served. Dive Shop briefing at 17:30: Unpack. Put our dive gear outside. Shower. Already time for the briefing. Arnoud (Arno) from France (± Nice) does the briefing. Dinner.

It's getting dark and I feel I am getting sleepy and tired [not a surprise after a 40hrs trip and still standing all day]. At eight o'clock we're done and go to bed, to only wake up at 4. Yes, very early, but still 8 hours of sleep. An hour later we go to the jetty to enjoy the sunrise. It's gorgeous.

November 23rd - Slow Start

Breakfast with Sweden, Canada, Lynn and Arno. We also have a chat with the other Canadians at the Resort (familie Brouwers ... and they do speak Dutch, we need to watch it ;-)). The rest of the day is for relaxing, taking pictures and ... already time for lunch.

In the afternoon I go into the water to do some snorkling at the house reef. It's nice, but not "out of this world" as one is told when going to Raja Ampat. No need to find Nemo, they were everywhere. Finally the jellyfish (many of them) drive me out of the water.

"Did you see the Dophine?" "Did you hear it?" "It was 2 meters behind you ... we kept calling you". Me again .. missed the Dolphine ...

Dinner: Gado Gado, saté, ... jummy.

November 24th - Ill

Petra didn't feel well getting up. Her throat was hurting, snotty and a bit feverish. At breakfast it's just Una, Magnus doesn't show up [Belly something ..]. Gary and Barb are at the table. Petra wants to give it a try anyway.

In the middle of the briefing Gary pops-up: "Barb isn't too well, so we will not join today". So, just the three of us. Guide is Hakim. Arno remembered he had to fly to Singapore tomorrow, so better no diving today.

Petra had some issues clearing her ears the 1st dive.

Jos: 61 [min] / 27.1 [m] | Petra: 61 [min] / 25.0 [m]

After a nice safety stop on the jetty of the local village (where we see a Walking Shark) we start our 2nd dive. This time some nice current, so we can watch the big barracuda's, hanging on our reef hook.

Jos: 60 [min] / 24.7 [m] | Petra: 60 [min] / 23.2 [m]

During lunch Una tells us Magnus is still not feeling well and she will stay with him. Petra already told me this morning she will only do 2 dives today. So the couple from Austria, Wilfried and Helga [Maldives junkies, Vilamendhoo, Filitheyo, numerous liveaboards, etc.] will be my buddy's for the afternoon dive. Gary joins to snorkel.

It is not a brilliant dive. Little current. Not much sun. Luckily my new Dive Torch works fine.

November 25th - Empty House

What a postivity. Those crazy Canadians (actually from Brabant, The Netherlands .. some time ago). Laughing and yelling another 3 rounds with the speed boat before they finally say goodbye and head for Sorrong. With them some others left, leaving only eight of us at the resort. That's it.

Our neighbours, Gary and Barb from Canada. Such a lovely and possitive couple. 71 but still thinking about getting certified to dive. Although keep on snorkeling is fine as well. Winfried and Helga from Austria on the otherhand seem less possitive. But when it comes to diving ... they are fanatics! Winfried learned diving when he was 48, that's 20 years ago, and has logged about 2000(!) dives since. All warm water dives. Helga got certified in 2002 and logged an unbelievable 1400 dives since. I hoop I will be as fit and adventures as them when I am 70 years old. Half of that will do, as I can't keep up with them already.

Yesterday the signs were already there. Music and singing, as the Canadians left today, but Petra didn't want to stay. Not feeling well. I am also doubting my fitness, and decide to stay with her for a "No Divinge Day". I know what happens if I push it: I will regret it later on. So this is the better choice.

Good news from Hakim: They fixed Petra's regulater .... they replaced the hoose ... for free. Wow!

November 26th - Diving Again

Mixed feelings today. The diving is not what I expected it to be. The current made the dives messy and the plankton 'killed' the visibility. The 3rd dive, Cape Kri, was the worst. Hanging for 50 min's in the current with nothing interesting to see. On the other hand, I saw my 1st Wobbegong. And another one on the 2nd dive. They are sooo beautiful. With a Sepia, an Eagle Ray, a Blacktip and a Wobbegong, the 2nd was memorable one anyway.

Jos: 53 [min] / 16.5 [m] | Petra: 53 [min] / 15.5 [m]
Jos: 64 [min] / 22.7 [m] | Petra: 62 [min] / 22.0 [m]
Jos: 57 [min] / 13.1 [m] | Petra: 57 [min] / 11.3 [m]

After the 3rd dive we explained to Hakim what happened. Tomorrow we'll go for some easier dives. And that's a better choice as Petra isn't top fit still and I am exhausted after a full day of diving.

November 27th - Manta Manta

And again we wake to the most beautiful sunrise ever [when you see those colorful Indonesian paintings .. they aren't exaggerated at all!]. O, what a beautiful place is this. Not to forget the bird alarm in the morning.

Today Manta Sandy and Arborek. As we don't spot mantas when passing Manta Sandy, we start at Arborek. When we see 2 mantas we jump in for a quick snorkel. Lovely. Arborek is a nice dive. Due to the current a bit of work to do.

Jos: 56 [min] / 20.7 [m] | Petra: 56 [min] / 18.9 [m]

Manta Sandy surpasses all our expectations. One full hour of manta show, 5 white and 2 black reef mantas.

Jos: 66 [min] / 16.5 [m] | Petra: 66 [min] / 16.2 [m]

The third dive, Hakim's favorite site, is also beautiful. A very nice diving day today!

Jos: 57 [min] / 20.4 [m] | Petra: skipped

November 28th - Three Average Dives

There was a lot of plankton today, so bad visibility. And that is always a pity. The 1st dive. Okay, a pygmy seahorse. The 2nd dive was a gorgeous wall. But since the light was coming from the wrong site, and since the island is like an overhang (hat), there was far too little light to enjoy the beauty to its full extent. The 3rd one was the same one as I did yesterday - at that time we did the top (flying over) and the viz was much better - when it was a lot nicer. Also the wobbegong was gone ... .

Jos: 66 [min] / 22.9 [m] | Petra: 66 [min] / 21.6 [m]
Jos: 61 [min] / 21.6 [m] | Petra: 61 [min] / 19.2 [m]
Jos: 66 [min] / 19.9 [m] | Petra: 65 [min] / 19.2 [m]

Gary and Barb went home this morning.

November 29th - Manta Manta ... Again

This morning we go for "Blue Magic". According Winfried the best dive site around and a chance for Oceanic Mantas. The season had started, so who knows?

Arriving at the site 2x good news. 1) just 2 other boats, and they are already in the water some time. 2) The mantas are here! We are dropped a little to far on the reef and need to work our way back a bit. Only 10 minutes in the dive Nando, our guide, sees a manta. We swim there to take a look. It's a gigantic oceanic manta. The next 50+ minutes it stays around, looking at us - checking us out. Just hanging on the reef it comes in so close ... like an eclipse, banning all the sunlight. What a dive!!

Jos: 72 [min] / 22.9 [m] | Petra: 71 [min] / 22.0 [m]

The 2nd dive, after our interval at Bat Island, was a nice dive with small stuff (except the Napoleon and Bumphead parrotfish ...). Mild current, so a lovely flight over the reef.

Jos: 63 [min] / 22.0 [m] | Petra: 63 [min] / 22.0 [m]

We're back late and the new guests had arrived. 12 Russians and a few other nationalities. The resort is full again.

[we already miss Barb's ear-to-ear smile]

Winfried and Helga are not so happy. The drink prices have gone up 30% (new season start?), and that is a lot as the wine is already not cheap to start with in Indonesia. After the 3rd dive (they did Otdima again) they were smiling again. It had been a very nice dive they said.

I am going to skip the night dive I planned. Enough is enough. Let's call it a day ..

November 30th - Washing Machine

Heavily clouded. No sun. The plan today is to do "Mike's Point" & "Cape Kri". During the 1st dive I am getting a bit chilled. Should have listened to Petra and wear my new 3mm body. During our safety stop, looking up, we see it started to rain. Getting out 'rain' seems an understatement, it's poring down. The boat is already filling up. Now were all cold. I quickly put on the 3mm body. We are heading for Yenbuba pier (we thought we would go back to the resort).

Jos: 60 [min] / 25.6 [m] | Petra: 60 [min] / 24.7 [m]

A chat with Una and Magnus, two cups of warm thee, and off we go for the 2nd dive. OMG, what a current! We reach the reef, but the current is from the wrong side (did we jump at the wrong side of the split? **). We all look at eachother, hanging at the reef in the strong current, and decide to cancel the dive. We let go of the reef and the current flushes us away. We fly over the reef, and than get pushed off the reef into a down current. We drop 8-10 meters in no time. Bubbles going down in stead of up. Very scary. I inflate my BCD and try to swim up. Slowly we go up ... and than it's calm again. We start our safety stop, but we're pulled down again. Out! Out! Vernando took Petra by the hand the whole time. Very thankful for that as she was close to panicking.
On the surface, waiting for the boat, Vernando is right next to me. In seconds he drifts 10 meters away. Man, crazy currents here! Winfried, who didn't get blown of the reef, is already on the boat. Little later we also pick up Helga. Jerry also had to take her by the hand and got her out safely. They got pulled to another direction.
"Anybody for an afternoon dive?" "YES!"

(** Later Hakim explains that there are different current directions at different depths. Only having reached 9 meters we probably didn't reach the main/bottom current, but stayed in the top current .... with above consequences)

Jos:  9 [min] / 16.8 [m] | Petra:  9 [min] / 15.4 [m]

During lunch Winfried makes sure the drink prices will remain as was for them. We took a little nap. And than time for the 3rd dive. "You want an easy dive?" Arno asks. "Yes". "Okay, let's go for Manta Sandy!". A good choice. Lovely 1 hour with 7 - 8 Manta's that keep flying by to go to the cleaning station and back in line. One could say the light was from the wrong site, and the viz wasn't that good, but who cares with so many Manta's to look at.

Jos: 69 [min] / 15.9 [m] | Petra: 69 [min] / 15.9 [m]

In the evening Arno asks me to share my manta video's and pictures for his "Identification Log". He also had a lot of questions on what we had seen the passed days. How many boats at each site, etc. Yes, the Marine Biologist is serious about his passion.

December 1st - Easy Dive Day

Some days don't have much to report, and this is one of them. A relaxed day with some easy dives. The current, as 'promised' during the briefing, isn't there. But we did see beautiful reefs, especially on the first 2 dives.

Jos: 62 [min] / 23.5 [m] | Petra: 61 [min] / 22.6 [m]
Jos: 61 [min] / 26.2 [m] | Petra: 61 [min] / 25.9 [m]

Curious which Bird Watching experience Una liked best. She had already done the morning one and is now going to do the afternoon one. Tomorrow Magnus and Una will leave. Pity. We enjoyed their company and conversation.

Jos: 61 [min] / 29.6 [m] | Petra: 61 [min] / 26.5 [m]

December 2nd - The Passage

A tour around the island today. We start with a dive at Citrus Ridge. Good viz and a fantastic reef.

The funniest thing happened there, but I only found out that night. I swam after a Wobbegong, filming it. On my return I saw a few Pilot Fish, and thought "poor guys, they lost their Wobby". When checking out the video in our room that night it was obvious they didn't loose their Wobby. It was lying in from of me, just centimeters away. Incredible camouflage as I didn't see it at all (and they are not tiny!).

We continue with a nice boat ride through the mangroves.

The Passage itself is a little bit of a fairground attraction. Nice to do once, but I wouldn't do it again.

Jos: 64 [min] / 25.9 [m] | Petra: 64 [min] / 24.4 [m]
Jos: 69 [min] / 14.1 [m] | Petra: 70 [min] / 14.0 [m]

Back at the resort we have a final check with Hakim. Unfortunately they didn't find the 5 pax total to join for Wayang (we couldn't understand people traveling all across the world and skip on this World Heritage site ... but we can't force them). Only Gaby, our neighbor from Germany, was okay to join. So Fam it will be then.

A lovely night dive on the House Reef, with Beto, completes the day.

Jos: 50 [min] / 16.8 [m] | Petra: skipped

December 3rd - Fam Islands

So not Wayang (and the dive sites on route), but Fam Islands. Germany (Gaby and Ralph, both traveling alone) and Austria (Winfried and Helga) join us on the boat. Our first dive is at Melissa's Garden. It is a gorgeous dive site with lots to see.

The plan was 1st dive, Fam Islands, lunch, followed by the 2nd dive. Arno decides lunch can wait. We first go to Fam and climb up the hill. Waw what a view! [one wonders how much better Wayang is... ] And immediately the 2nd dive: Anita's Garden. Again an incredibly beautiful reef. And the viz, super!

Jos: 69 [min] / 24.1 [m] | Petra: 69 [min] / 23.2 [m]
Jos: 63 [min] / 21.6 [m] | Petra: 63 [min] / 20.4 [m]

We have lunch at a local beach. The local Monitor Lizards are already waiting for us. Four show up (later a fith one joins) and they are not shy at all. A little bit too used to people for my liking as they get very close when charging for scraps being thrown.

A nice gift during our return: we spot 5 manta's feeding at the surface. We all - including the majority of the boat crew - jump in to snorkel. This never gets booring.

December 4th - Red Bird of Paradise

4:25 is when the alarm beeps. We have planned to go bird watching and are supposed to meet Hakim at 4:50 at the restaurant. He is already waiting for us when we arrive. He wakes up Derek, who joins to watch us, and quickly arranges binoculars. After a short boat ride we arrive at the jetty of the neighboring village where bird man Nico is awaiting us.
We need to walk through the village and another 15 minutes or so through the jungle to reach the first bird spot. A kind of Cockatoos, but it's still quit dark so we can hardly see them. We can surely hear them. Now to the main attraction: Red Bird of Paradise. There is a kind of bench one can sit on and lean backwards to watch them far up in the tree. Very far up in the tree. The male birds start dancing for the (dull looking) females. Difficult to see with binoculars that are blurred (sea water entered?). That leaves the zoom on my compact camera as the only way to see them. The zoom is enough (20x optical plus 20x digital), but to keep them in the screen while they nervously jump up and down the branches, dancing, is difficult. Let alone keep them in focus. The later it gets the brighter it gets, the better we can see them.
The nearby thunder is getting loader and closing in. We need to start going, as the rain is starting. Nico asks if we want to wait, but we think we best move before it gets all wet and slippery. On our arrival in the village we are soaking wet. Despite of some problems a nice morning adventure we wouldn't have wanted to miss. Time for breakfast.

"Petra & Jos, where do you want to dive?" "Cape Kri?" "I'll be your personal guide" "Or do you want to go to Otdima?" Hakim tries to convince us to join him to go to Kri as, after two failed dives there, he wants to show why we should dive there and why it's so famous. Petra is doubting a long time, but finally she says: "Yes, let's go to Kri!".

The current on the reef is not much this time (too little?) and at the end we spot a nice Sepia - we hadn't seen one this trip yet, so a nice bonus. On our safety stop we also see some real Dories. Very good!

"Und Winfried?" "Zu viel Strömung auf Otdima. Wir sind irgendwo anders, auf die andere seite, gewezen. Saum Rif. Ach."

Jos: 67 [min] / 28.7 [m] | Petra: 67 [min] / 28.8 [m]

December 5th - Soto Ajam

Man, does time fly. We arrived at our final day already. A relax one. Some stroling on the beach. Drying our dive gear. Chatting with the dive guides (Fahmy and Vernando). A bit of sleep. Lunch: Yes, Soto Ajam - lekker!
We repeat the morning in the afternoon. Stamp the logbooks. O, I need to take my medication. I left it with them (needs to be in the fridge) almost 2 weeks ago. Arno gets it from the kitchen and I am pleasantly surprised to see it was still okay.
Time to pack. Tonight, dinner with dancing and music with the locals from the nearby village. Tomorrow wake-up at 6:00, we're leaving at 7:00.

December 6th - The Big Trip Home

Full boat to Sorong (Ralph, Gaby, Helga, Winfried and Darwin, Australia: Tracy, Allen, Matthiah and Brad). First stop at the hotel, and then to the airport. A quick checking, but only to Jakarta. We say goodbye to Darwin (they have planned an extra few days in Manadoo) and fly together with Ralph (he sits next to me) to Makasar.
At the transfer desk we ask if we can check in for Amsterdam. "Yes, no problem. We'll also re-label your luggage directly to Amsterdam, no need to re-check in Jakarta". Great, but I think we better check to make sure. To the lounge now and wait for a big 6 hours before our flight to Jakarta leaves.
In Jakarta we watched other peoples luggage passing by on the belt for a good 45 minutes. At that time all had been collected and ours didn't pass by, so it must have been checked through as they said in Makasar. Arriving in Amsterdam confirmed that. It was one of the first on the belt. Perfect. Which also describes this holiday very well: Perfect.

Ooh Solley Solley .... don't ask my why, but it had been in my head for almost 2 weeks.

It was a sad goodbye from Raja Ampat - as good memories always are.

Villa Markisa (Heaven)

Continued from "Lotus Bungalows (Mola Mola)"

After a drive of about 45 minutes to an hour we arrived at Villa Markisa: "Paradise found"! Wauw, this looks really great. Yes, we are on holiday again. [sms from home: Griezel, our cat, is back home]

April 9th - The Liberty

Get up early! Appointment at the dive shop at 6:30 in the morning. Today we will do our first dive at Villa Markisa. We are going to dive the famous Liberty Wreck. And since it can be crowded ..... we leave early. The dive guides are a little vague in their communication (because they are still young?), but in 15 minutes all is arranged and off we go to the wreck (I quickly changed the straps from my fins to Petra's as the Aqualung fins from VM are we too big for Petra, for me they will do I guess).

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

We left early and are the first to arrive. Wauw, what a beautiful site. And so many fish. All the natives, as described on many stories of the Liberty Wreck, are home: The Great Barracuda, the Bumphead Parrotfish, the big swirling school of Jacks and many more. As it's getting busier by the minute and we are slowly running out of air we move back to VM for breakfast, which is very good by the way.

In the afternoon we head for the house reef. Our guide already tells us before we go in that the Harlequin Shrimp's are gone. Hmmm, pitty. The dive is however very nice. We saw a lot of nice critters. Amongst others a Tiger Shrimp (unfortunately taking a picture wasn't that easy). Our guide spend another 10-15 minutes looking for a small Frogfish, but couldn't find it.

In the late afternoon Petra treater herself to a Body Scrub. It was "Heaven" she said when returning. In the maintime I read my book.

Dinner - a mix of Indonesian and Thai - was very good! (I have to watch myself, I am eating too much)

April 10th - Pink Frogfish

After breakfast - it's approximately 09:00 o'clock - we leave for our first dive of the day: Bulaken. The attraction of this site is a big Pink Frogfsih. And yes, it was a very nice looking Frogfish. We also saw 2 sorpion leaf fish and of course lots of nice little stuff.

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

Strange though, that I seem to be using quite a lot of air (after about 30 minutes only 60 bar left). Due to that I fininsh the dive, after 60 minutes, with only 30 bar in my tank. And that hasn't happened for a long time. When checking Petra's gauge she still had a normal 60 bar left after 60 minutes. Hmmm, normally we are quite equal on air usage.

The second dive site was near the first dive site. A nice dive with an Octopus and again, lots of fish. And the air usage . . . . 50 bar left after a 70 minutes dive. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Time for lunch: Gado gado with chicken saté. Jammy.

In the early evening we added a night dive. Very funny, especially all those small eyes in the beam everywhere you look. Small crabs and shrimps. Some little octopus. And a few squid, 3 small ones and a big one (which I could video nicely in the beam of our torches).

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

After dinner some bad news: the Harlequin Shrimps (which Seraya Secret, Villa Markisa's house reef is famous for and which we had never seen before) were nowhere to be found.

April 11th - Shoes

Whose shoes are that?  . . . . . . And where are mine? . . . . . Hmmm, I believe I have put on Pacek, our dive guide, his shoes yesterday after the night dive. When checking at the dive shop that seemed to have happened. Few minutes later Pacek arrives at the dive shop . . . . on my flipflops.

At 09:00 o'clock we leave for Alumie (left from VM), where after a few minutes, the main attrackion has been located: Pygmy Seahorses (hippocampus bargibanti). We count four of them in the pink fan.

During our second dive, at Emerald, we are acompanied again by the Bumphead Parrotfish. A Napoleon, that seemed to have almost bit my noose, I completely overlooked. I saw Petra and Dharma, our dive guide for the day, making the typical sign, but I thought they ment the Bumpheads. Luckely I saw the second one cruising by.

In the afternoon, after lunch, I finished my book: Hypnose by Lars Kepler. A nice thriller. At the same moment Christianne, VM's owner, and 3 dive guides step out of the water: Success! They found a baby Harlequin Shrimp. So, tomorrow afternoon I may do a house reef.

To finish off the afternoon Petra treats herself to a Spa treatment. And I go or a half an hour swim in the pool.

April 12th - Two-tank dive

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

This morning we plan for a two-tank dive. At about 08:00 o'clock we leave for Lipah Bay. A 25 minutes boat ride. The dive site is very beautiful. In the shalows a sunken Japanese Patrol boat, full of soft corals. The rest of the dive site is full of hard corals and, again, loads of colourfull fish.

After our safety interval of an hour (and a bit), in which we had a nice chat with our three (!!) dive guides and the captain, we head for our second dive: a wall. Well . . .  a wall. Only for a few minutes than. After that it seems like thPacek had lost his way (it had been 3 months since he dived this site). A lot of death coral, with here and there a nice patch. Unfortunately not too exciting.

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

After lunch (Nasi Goreng - aj, we are eating too much here - it's too good) I have a dive on the house reef with Christianne, Dharma and guide "3" (later on I remebered his name is Tisnu). We saw lots of small critters, but unfortuantely no Harlequin Shrimp. Petra spend her afternoon reading her book on one of the sun beds in VM's beautiful garden.

April 13th - Just a wonderfull day

We started the day with two dives. The first one at Kubu, where we saw lot's of nice stuff. An Octopus, a Sepia and two Tapestryshrimp. On the second dive (to Batu Belah) we were accompanied by Christianne - who took all 3 young dive guides (Dharma, Tisnu and Rasni) on the boat the have then gaining experience - and Judith - a friend of the house - joined. Also during this dive we again saw lot's of nice stuff. For example a Brittle Star. After 84 minutes (yes, dives at VM are not limitted to 60 minutes at all) we ended another fantastic dive.

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

After lunch (we could choose, so again a Gado gado with chicken saté - so good) we dozed off on a sun bed in the garden. Petra did some reading. I had a swim in the pool. So nice, a lazy afternoon.

April 14th - Baby Baby Baby

Rise and shine! We are trying a second round at the Liberty, so out of bed early. Hmmmm . . . nobody at the dive shop? The captain is also very surprised that none of the dive guides had showed up yet. He immediately calls Dharma to check what happened. About ten minutes later we hear Dharma singing his favourit song - Baby Baby Baby oooh ooh a / by Justin Beaber - when he walks around the corner towards the dive shop (we think he had a little party last night). And now rush rush to the Liberty!

Again - it's such a beautifull site. No surprise it's so famous.

After a lovely breakfast we head for Coral Garden, accompanied by Pacek and "Gegen gegen" (don't know why, but Rasni said that alll the time). A very nice dive with a little bit of everything. The nicest of which a small Sepia.

Time for lunch: Soto Ajam.

After spending the afternoon relaxing we headed for our last dive: a night dive. Luckily the wind had calmed down - after a beautiful morning the whether suddenly changed: wind, thunder & lightning in the afternoon. Again a very nice dive, with again a surprise: 3 Ghost pipefish, a baby Frogfish and same Tiger shrimp.
This last dive of our holiday in Bali was my 299th dive. Petra still tops me, it was her 300th dive!!

Van Villa Markisa - Tulamben 2010

Time for dinner.

New guests. a Swiss bruiser, with wife and son. And a french couple. After the Engineer from California and the weird American couple from Pakistan (and before that Djibouti) we have had quite a circus passing by. Therefore the past two days had been so nice. No other guests, just us on our Private Villa!

April 15th - Damn knee

As with every dive holiday you can't dive the last day. The body has to de-tox before you are allowed to fly. So we spend the whole day being lazy and doing little to nothing. Okay, we had to pack our diving gear and the eveing pack our bags.

Oh no. The knee feeling 'thight' and my left lower leg started to tingle. Shit, it's starts to swell again - just as it did two days before leaving for Bali - now that we have to fly for hours and hours tomorrow.

April 16th - Leaving heaven, heading for .....

In the morning, after breakfast, we settled the bill. At least, we made an attempt. Internet banking didn't work (the connection must have been too slow). And the next option, using a Credit Card, also failed (again, no connection). Fortunatelly Christianne proposed to settle the bill back home. What kind guesture - and so trustfull!

Time to say goodbye - waived goodbye by all (yes all) the staff we drove off to the airport.

The ride to Denpassar (2:45 hours) was quite smooth. So was the check in and immigration. We just had ordered lunch, when we received our first (of many) sms: "Can you fly due to the vulcano?"

Lotus Bungalows (Mola Mola)

Continued from "Magnificent Kajane (the leg)"

Van Holidays Diving Dreaming

April 3rd - Arriving at Lotus Bungalows

After a long drive we arrived at Lotus Bungalows. Hmmm ..... that's a few levels down comparred to Kajane - the place we stayed the previous days. Also the food is quite simple. Of course this was to be expected, after staying at your all time favourit first. So let's make the best of it and hopefully the diving - the main reason we booked LB - is lots of fun.

Tomorrow our 1st dive @ Nusa Penida!

Van Lotus Bungalows - Candidasa 2010

April 4th - Mola Mola [Easter]

How different the next day can be! Okay, we didn't sleep super - the bed is small, the airco noisy and so is the fridge (which I unplugged in the middle of the night) - and the breakfast wasn't either. BUT ... the diving, the main reason, or better 'the one and only reason', we decided to go to LB is very very good organized! Everthing (yes everthing - except the diving itself of course) is being done for you. And the boat is extremely good (best boat we have ever been on!). And that's only the part above water ....

Going under it was a real treat. Beautiful coral reefs (we didn't know what to expect - and this is for sure better than what we hoped for!), good visibility and than - totally unexpected, as it is by far not the good season to see them: A Mola Mola!

Our first dive in Bali, and than to see a Mola Mola. Wauw. The huge fish came slowly up to about 27m, and stayed there quite some time (to be cleaned by butterflyfish). In the mid of the dive another Mola Mola come up and close. Seeing these fish feels like being in Jurasic Park. It also feels cold, brrrrr. These fish are normally only to be seen in August - September, when the water is much much colder (16-19°C), when they come in with the Antarctic undercurrents. Also now they came up in a cold upwelling. The water temperature dropped from about 27°C to about 20°C around the Mola Mola. And that's COLD if your only wearing a 5mm dive suite!

Back on the boat we enjoyed our lunch: Nasi Goreng. Which tasted good (and so did the sweet sambal), so they actually know how to cook. Back at LB it's time to relax on the big lounge beds at the sea side and enjoy a Watermelon Juice. Dinner was tasting good: Hunger? Adjustment? Or ..... it may not be so bad after all?! Tomorrow: Manta Point - we really hope they will be there - fingers crossed!

[I finished my 1st book: Bad Intentions by Karin Fossum]

April 5th - Manta Point

After I good sleep (putting the airco on "quiet" helps!") we headed to the boat with the following dive plan: 1st dive 'somewhere around "Nusa Penida", 2nd dive "Manta Point" and 3rd dive again "Manta Point" if the 2nd one wasn't successfull. The reason is that, due to the Manta mating season, they hadn't seen Manta's for more than a week. The obviously were doing 'their own thing' and didn't want all the diving paparazzi around.

The first dive was according plan. During the dive we saw a nice turtle. On our way to the second dive spot the sea was getting rougher as we had to pass the channel between Nusa Lenbongan and Nusa Penida. We were todl that 70.000 liters of seawater every second is passing this channel (the Pacific Ocean pours into the India Ocean 'through' Indonesia as she is a few meters (!) higher).

Petra was already feeling a little nauseous due to this. During the dive we had a constant surge, making it even worse. After a long hour of waiting and searching for the manta's, we had to conclude they weren't there. But we were lucky to see quite a big (significantly bigger as the 1.04m Wikipedia reports!) Brownbanded Bamboo Shark. Due to the surge I almost 'fell' on it, and she swam away. And than our dive guide found an Octopus (and they are soo lovely).

Back on the boat we decided to skip the third dive (we all agreed that the chances of seeing a manta didn't outway staying on a rocky boat during lunch and than getting back in the surge .... for an hour).

The boat headed for a calm bay for lunch. In the bay we met the other boat of Gangga Divers (the owners of LB). They had the big (14 persons) Spanish group on board that stayed at LB. [our luck, as we were 3 divers - the 2 of us and Karoline, a German woman, and 2 dive guides!] All the empty tanks were put on our boat to make some room on theirs. We understood they were going to have a try at Manta Point for their third dive - we wished them the best off luck. Maybe tonight, during the "Balinese Evening" we will hear if they were successfull.

April 5th - Springrolls with Satay sauce

What a lovely day! First dive with a lot of current. Nicely 'flying' over a beautiful and colourfull reef. The seccond reef was a little less nice (some dead patches), but still, a very nice dive!

Van Lotus Bungalows - Candidasa 2010

During lunch we ordered Springrolls with Satay sauce. And that Satay sauce was soooo goooood. Makes you wonder why they served satay without sauce yesterday evening during the Balinese Evening?!

In the evening we made a night dive. And what a night dive. Superduper. So many nice things to see, to much to mention. Also our favourit, the Sepia (or Cuttlefish) and the Octopus, as well as a bright orange frog fish!

April 6th - Snapping straps

The last full day at LB. Today 2 dives near two small islands just off Bali (known as Shark Point). O no, Petra's fin strap snaps. What, also the next one snaps!! Strange, one dives a 100+ dives without issues, and now they both snap in a few seconds??!!

Luckily we could use a pair from the dive shop which they had on the boat. They were actually too big, but it would do for a day.

The dive site itself was very nice, but visability was bad (peasoup). The second dive was supposed to be current dive according dive giude Putu (our dive guide of the previous days, Wayan, didn't join last night and didn't come along today - no idea why?!). Karoline didn't fancy a struggle in the current and decided to stay on the boat. She was kind enough to borrow Petra her fins: much more comfortable, as they were the same brand and size as her own. Underwater we found out that there was no current at all. We did see a Whitetip Reef Shark.

In the afternoon Karoline invited us to join her for a small drink. She brought a Bailays like liqueur from South Africa (with an Eliphant on the label, made from a flower they obviuously liked). We chatted all afternoon. Very nice!

Looking back we really enjoyed our stay at LB. Also to food seemed to improve by the day. Funny though that they mastered Italian food better than Indonesian (the Pizza's were good!). As so often, number 13 was with me again: Room #113, Dive Box #13. Yep, it was okay.
The dive shop was very very good, with a 2-tank dive EVERY day. As we prefer it.

April 8th - A little ripped off

The last breakfast at LB (jammy, bacon and eggs). Quickly pack the dive gear and than settle the bill ...... auch ..... that's a big disappointment! The exchange rate was very very bad (should be 8.x Rupiah per Dollar, it was 10 Rupiah per Dollar), so the Credit Card bill, which was in Rupiah, was quite a bit higher than expeted. On top of that they added 2% Credit Card cost. Well, what can you do. Swipe the card, close your eyes, sign and move on!

After saying goodbye to Karoline we left for our next, and last, stop in Bali.

To be continued .......

Magnificent Kajane (the leg)

Van Holidays Diving Dreaming
March 26th - Two days before the trip to Bali

Thursday evening (March 25th) panic: My leg (lower left) was totally swolen. I called the doctor immediatelly the next morning. Appointment at 12 o'clock. Explained the situation (Bechterew, just back from Detroit, leg/knee is hurting already quite some time, etc, etc). We went through a medical flow chart: slight indication for DVT (Deep vein thrombosis). So, off we went to the AZM (Academic Hospital in Maastricht) to get my blood tested. At about 15:00 hours the doctor called to brief the outcome: not good. An echo is needed to be sure. At 16:00 hours back at the AZM to get an echo: No thrombosis. We can go to Bali! [but what is the issue with the leg ...?]

March 27th - One day before the trip to Bali

My sisters 12½ wedding anniversary: the leg wasn't getting any better. It was getting worse.

March 28th - Leaving for Bali

Sunday morning. Getting up to leave for Frankfurt. Shit, now the knee is also swolen! .... Flight to KL was smooth. We sat on row 11, so the front row, and I therefore could stretch my leg easily. But after 12 hours of flying ..... it wasn't getting better.

Stop-over in Kuala Lumpur (few hours) and walking is getting worse. To be sure, and since the knee feels instable, we buy a knee support band and some elastic bandage. And now .. to Denpassar (~3 hrs flight).

March 29th - Arriving in Bali
Damn, I can barely walk anymore when landed in Denpassar. Leaving the knee support band on in the plane was obviously not very smart.
Van Kajane Mua - Ubud 2010
Customs, imigration, bagage reclaim, it all goes smoothly, and the boy from Kajane is also already waiting for us. Immedately when arriving at our privat pool villa in Ubud I call my own doctor in Maastricht: Bechterew (diagnosed about 2 months ago) was not known to him. The medication that I already take due to that is also what he would suggest for muscule or tendon issues. So, rest and put ice on it to reduce the swelling was the advise. In case the issue is in the joint (what doesn't seem to be the case) than I may go to the local hospital for further treatment.

What a mess - on the possitive side: "The Holiday can start!".

In the evening we had a nice dinner, just a cross the street, at Cinta. Hopefully tomorrow things have improved.

March 30th - Ubud

Long night, despite of that I slept well. When going to the toilet in the middle of the night walking was also much better. Petra looked for the button of the light outside of the villa (as it was a litte too bright). No success.

In the morning walking was again more difficult. Under the shower I could, again, only stand on one leg. So, as before, ice on the leg and keep it high. Later in the day I did some 'excersize' in the pool. Yes, that helps. Walking to the restaurant for lunch is doable. During luch we had a tropical downpour. Now back to the villa for our afternoon thee.

Quite enjoyable, doing nothing all day. But I hope my mobility improves tomorrow.

Next task: to the restaurant for dinner. Going was easy, coming back more difficult. The calf muscle was cramped (a 'long' pain over the middle of the muscle). The knee is still warm, but if I walk carefully and use the knee band, I am fine.

March 31st - Sarong

Second half of the night I was sweating quite bad (just like yesterday), due to which my back was stiff in the morning. I better cut back on the spicy food?!

The swelling is reducing. Will be well after all?

Petra has been to the local market where she has bought 2 very nice sarongs. A coton and a silk one, both with bird print.

Walking is improving. The leg is swelling every time I attempt to walk, and sit down normally. But it's getting less and less on average.

In the evening we, again, had a nice dinner at Cinta. I chose the lean Tuna Steak - so my diet may be okay!

April 1st - Bag and Bike

Today again a lovely day in Ubud (although the above may read as 'all bad', we had planned to relax at our beautiful privat pool villa, and that's exactly what we have been doing). After breakfast we went shopping - Petra bought herself a nice blue 'summer' bag in the town center. We did all by foot - so yes, things are improving significantly. After that we picked up the (free to use) bikes (or what they call bikes here) at Kajane, to go to a nice restaurant for lunch. In between and after these activities floated, swam and 'excersized' in the villa's pool. After an afternoon nap we went to our favourite restaurant: Cinta. This may sound dull, but it's just across the street and the food is good, so .... .

A little bit of reading and than a nice and relaxed day in Ubud is ended.

April 2nd - Sightseeing
Van Kajane Mua - Ubud 2010
It's time to see something else than our pool villa. Time to do some sightseeing! We rented a car with driver from the hotel ($15/hr only) and headed for the 'things to see' in the Ubud area. Our first stop was to see the world famous rice paddies around Ubud. After making some pic's of the scenery We drove on to Petulu, the fanous town of the White Herrons (our driver told us to watch out for the birds droppings - at the same time he explained, with a smile, the locals percieved this as blessings). Next stop, the Goa Gajah - or Eliphant cave. Last stop was to overlook the river Ayung Gorge. This is where the out of budget hotels (like the Fourseasons) are located. And it is clear why! We visited one, the Royal Pita Maha, that is owned by a/the Bali royal family.

Van Kajane Mua - Ubud 2010

A very nice morning was completed with a simple, but very nice, lunch at one of the more authentic (little bit off the road) small restaurants. The afternoon clarified why Bali is so beautifully green: down pour all through the afternoon and evening.

Time for afternoon thee.

April 3rd - Leaving Ubud

A sad moment, seeing goodbye to Kajane. This little 'Special Lodging' may be the best value for money in the world. It for sure is Petra's favourite pace to go! One of the main reasons we returned to Bali, and they - again - didn't disappoint us a second.

Return to the Island of the Gods - Update

Following the reviews on the net about Siddhartha, we started to doubt our choice. Too many people reported the same 'not well run' experience. But okay, they just opened and it may improve .... ?
Than, during our stay on Filitheyo, we again started to doubt Siddhartha. The couple who is running Siddhartha used to run the dive operations in Filitheyo (both Werner Lau), so no doubts about the diving operations - fore sure that will be very well run. But .... the Siddhartha Resort is now RUN by a Dive Operations Manager. So a person who knows how to run a dive shop, but not how to run a Resort.

Lookin at all the reviews on our return our worry was, again, confirmed. Siddhartha is a beautiful place, but .... not run professionally by experienced people in the industry. And we know beauty is something, but service is everything!

Back to square one and look for an alternative: which we found quite fast. We cancelled Siddhartha (money back in the bank in a few days - as expected of a German/Swiss operation), and booked Villa Markisa.

Not only does this Resort receive excellent reviews only (not a surprise knowing that the couple running this place used to run the Pindito, the very high end liveaboard to Raja Ampat), but the also have an additional plus.
Villa Markisa is located in front a place called 'Seraya Secrets', a new discovered Much Diving Spot on Bali. And as we enjoyed Muck Diving so much in Lembeh, this was an easy choice retrospectively.

Return to the Island of the Gods

Stop Dreaming - take action

We have been to Indonesia now two times. The first time, when heading for a 'hard core' dive week in Wakatobi, we stayed at Bali at the start and end of the trip. The second time, recently, we went to Sulawesi. Both times we realy realy enjoyed ourselves, both above as well as under water.

With the above experience in mind we started to look for an offerdable combination of the above. Browsing through the options. Looking at the dive reviews at the 'known' sites. We decided to go to Bali and try the diving there.

Looking at the map of Bali there are three locations famous for diving:

  1. Around Nusa Penida (1&4 on the picture below). Lot's of current, and with some luck Mola Mola*
  2. Around Tulamben and the world famous "Liberty Wreck" (2&3 on the picture below)
  3. Near Java, where you can find "Secret Bay" (5 on the picture below)
*our trip is outside the Mola Mola season - so we may have to go back :-)

A cheap flight with super service
When going to place like Indonesia and trying to minimize your expense: look for a cheap flight 1st! We found the best deal flying from Frankfurt with Malaysia Airlines (appr. the same cost of one last year, we now fly both).
Already pleasantly surprized with the super deal, we were in for another surprise: Malaysia Airlines serive. MA show on their website that one can take 10kg of diving gear for free. We had our doubts (we read reviews of people who had to pay a lot of money on their return trip), so we mailed them to verify. "Yes, you can take 15kg of diving gear for free each, just .......". When we didn't comply correctly to their request, they immediately called us the next day to explain - assuring we could enjoy their service. Two days later we received new tickets, clearly identifying 15kg aditional free dive lugage each! Wow.
1st stop in Bali: Paradise re-found
Having been to Kajane Mua in Ubud there is no other option than return when returning to Bali. So no surprise, we are returning. Just a few days of getting into the time zone, getting used to the climate and enjoying some relaxing days before heading for the dive destinations.

Lotus Bungalows

When looking at the distances between the dive sites (see above), and the time to get to the remote places from a central located hotel - 2 to 4 hrs - we concluded it was better to look for a hotel close to the dive sites, rather than spend our time stuck in traffic all day in a minibus. In the Nusa Penida area all reviews pointed at one option: Lotus Bungalows.

Siddhartha - Werner Lau

At the Talumben side of Bali we initially looked at Alam Anda. An hotel afiliated to Werner Lau with extremely good reviews. However, on the Werner Lau site we found that they are opening a new resort close by: Siddhartha. Not much more expensive, but by the looks of it a lot more luxurious. We expected that, knowing it is just opening now, prices will go up soon, so we thougt "let's try it now before it becomes unafordable".

It is still quite some time before we go ........ counting the days already!

Critter paradise

Our story about our trip to Sulawesi, Indonesia. We stayed at Bunaken Cha Cha the 1st half, and at the Lembeh Resort the 2nd half of this Holiday.

March 30th - Arrival in Manado

After a long long trip (Maastricht > Amsterdam > Singapore > Manado) we arrived at Manado. To our big surprise there was nobody waiting for us to pick us up?! When mentioning the 'Bunaken Cha Cha' we were asked whether we were Frank Essers, the party they were waitng for. Fortunately Frank and Annemiek, a Dutch couple that just moved to Singapore, didn't arrive yet at the pick-up, so we could join them.

After an hour in a taxi and an other hour on a boot we arrived at the resort. A bit later, entering the room, it became clear that we weren't expected to arrive. The room was far from tidy, and the rubbish and building material didn't give us a welcoming feeling. We were suposed to check in into room 1, which still needed some repair.

After a good dinner, we had a long sleep.

March 31st - Change room

The next morning after breakfast, another nap and a good lunch we moved into room 1. This was a lot better! Our holiday could start :-)

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

In the afternoon we 'explored' the beach, accompanied by 2 of the 4 dogs of the resort. Later, during the afternoon tea, we had a nice chat with Frank and Annemiek, our new neighbours. They both were teachers and had jut moved to Singapore, after having lived in Cairo for eleven years. Before that they lived in Jakarta. But as always, the world is small, as their sun lives in Maastricht.

April 1st - The diving starts

Today we dived Lekuan III and Tawara, where we saw our first Harlequin Ghost Pipe Fish.

April 2nd: Mandolin, Fukui

April 3rd: Siladen South, Cha Cha II

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

April 4th - Current, worms and a vet

Today we made 2 nice drift dives (Timur I & Muka Kampung), which was quite funny as Frank didn't join yesterday as there were 'dives with current' planned. Reality was that we had a lot more current today, and Frank joined.

In the evening I addressed the 'red worms' that were in the tap water. A 'I'll have them look at the filters' was all he could say - not even a slight sorry. The fact that Raf and Reiko, the owners of Cha Cha, had some issues with their staff was more than obvious. We guess that's why we didn't find the 'warm and carring' people we read about so many times on the reviews. On the other side, we met a a very enthousiastic dive guide, Soleman (who spoke Dutch). And a very nice American girl, Kara, who was Cha Cha's Yoga teacher and did some dive guiding on the side.

In the afternoon the local vet had arrived to check out the old femal dog.

April 5th: Lekuan III, Lekuan II

April 6th: Tiwoho Reef, Abang Point, Cha Cha II

April 7th - Last day in Cha Cha

Today, when leaving for our last 2 dives in The Bunaken National Park (Mike's Point & Long Beach), we saw dolphins passing by. A lovely sight.

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

During the day we urged Raf to assure the transfer to the Lembeh Resort was arranged. Finally, after dinner, he confirmed.

During the last night I was bitten by a Centipot (aawch) while I was sleeping. Although I was told the ones in Cha Cha weren't poiseness, but you're never sure and you feel strange tinteling everywhere. Nope, I didn't sleep that much anymore that night.

Cha Cha in summary

Bunaken Cha Cha is a simple resort and they have their issues. But looking back we realy enjoyed ourselves here. Something we wouldn't have guessed when we arived.

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

April 8th - Lembeh Resort

After a ride of about 2 hours from Manado to Bitung, listening to the drivers Scorpions tape (again and again), we arrived at the Lembeh Resort. Yes, we had planned our holiday in the correct order. This was quite a few classes better.

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

Arrving around lunch ment that we could have our first dive (Aer Prang 2) already in the afternoon. At first it's quite strange this 'muck diving', only black sand and no corals. You wonder, will this still be fun to do the 8 days? On the other hand, there are lots of very strange and very uncommon creatures at show in the Lembeh Strait.

April 9th - Camera 'fixed'

Startin the day with Do (Elly's music) on the speakers.

After having been a bit frustrated while trying to take pictures on the deep parts of the dives, and having a camera that refused to do what it should do: take pictures, I finally found the reason. The zoom button didn't go back to the neutral possition by itself due to the water pressure. Knowing this I could simply push it back manually and shoot the next picture!

Dived: Rojos, Nudie Falls and Serena Besar

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

April 10th - Erwin

Today when walking into the dive shop a guy introduced himself as 'hello, I am Ûrwin'. I said; 'I know you!'. We met Erwin (his parents are Dutch, but he realy is a Kiwi) a few years ago on Wakatobi. He soon remebered.

It was funny to meet him again at another resort.

Dived: Pante Parigi, Makawidi 3 and Police Pier 2

April 11th - Mimic & Pygmee

The day started with rain and thunder storm. This didn't hamper the diving, as today we saw the very fanous Mimic Octopus. In the morning we already saw 8 Pygmee Seahorses. A very good day!

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

Dived: Nudi Retreat, Aer Bajo 2 and Jahir 2

April 12th - Easter

Today we watched Erwin giving a snorkel course in the pool. To my surprise I learned a new trick: When coming back up to the surface one should release a small breath of air in the snorkel. Do to the decreasing pressure while surfacing, the air expands and clears the snorkel (you need to look up to make this work). At the surface the snorkel is clear of water and you can immediately breath and don't need to 'blow clear' it.

Dived: Hair Ball 3, TK 2 and Tanjung Kubur

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

April 13th - 4 Dives in 1 day

For the 1st time in our diving 'carreer' we did 4 dives on 1 day. So after the 3 day dives on programm, we did an additional 'Mandrin Dive', visiting a bush of deerhorn coral on the House Reef where the fanous Mandrin Fish performs his&her daily matting ritual during sunset.

Dived: Nudi Falls, Makawide 1, Aer Prang 1 and Mandrin House Reef

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

April 14th: Hey Hus, Slow Poke & Aer Prang 3

Van Bukanen Cha Cha & Lembeh Strait 2009

April 15th - 250 dives

Today, during the last dive day of our holiday, we both made our 250th dive. Petra during the 1st and Jos during the last dive of the day.

Dived: Washuck, TK 3 and Makawide 3

April 16th - Last day in Paradise

As always on a diving holiday the last day is a 'no dive day'. You need to detox, assuring you don't get divers desease when flying back home. Despite the overcast I got a sun burn.

We ended the day with a nice masage.

Lembeh Resort summary

Diving the Lembeh Strait may have been our best diving experience ever (allthough difficult to compare with Mozambique). Looking back in our dive logs and counting the number of strange and uncommon species we have seen dive after dive after dive ..... mind blowing. The resort itself also added to the experience: a view to die for, super clean and very very well run. It will be difficult not to return here somewhere in the futur!

April 17th - Butterflies and Koi

Today we had a long trip home ahead of us. During the 7 hr stop-over in Singapore we enjoyed the butterfly garden and had a nice Thai dinner.

April 18th - Back home

Arriving back home and picking up our cats at there hotel. A beautiful holiday had come to an end.
